Preventive Care

Preventive care — catch problems before they become emergencies

The dental care that's least visible but most valuable — cleanings, sealants, oral cancer screenings, fluoride, sports and night guards, and patient education. Routine preventive visits save you from emergency care later.

What preventive care covers

More than just cleanings — a coordinated approach to keeping problems away

Preventive dental care is the foundation of every long-term outcome we work toward. It's the routine maintenance that catches small problems while they're still small — and avoids the larger, more expensive, more uncomfortable treatments that would otherwise become necessary. At Suncoast we treat preventive care as a coordinated set of services across every patient visit.

The core is twice-yearly cleanings and checkups, with comprehensive exams and oral cancer screenings included. Beyond that, preventive care includes sealants for children and adults with deep tooth grooves, fluoride applications for patients at higher cavity risk, patient education on home care, dietary guidance for tooth health, and custom-made night and sports guards from our on-site lab for patients who clench, grind, or play contact sports.

We also believe preventive care includes honest conversations about what you're noticing — sensitivity, occasional pain, bleeding gums, changes in your bite. Catching these signals early means addressing the underlying cause before it progresses. Bring up anything you've been wondering about at your next cleaning.

Preventive care — frequently asked

Common questions about preventive dental care.

Twice a year for most patients — every 6 months. Higher-risk patients (gum disease, frequent cavities, dry mouth) may benefit from more frequent visits, typically every 3 to 4 months. Your hygienist and dentist will recommend the right interval for your specific case.
Yes — cleanings, exams, oral cancer screenings, and most preventive services are covered by CDCP, often at 100% for the lowest income tier. More on CDCP coverage.
Sometimes — adults with deep grooves on back teeth, frequent decay, or high cavity risk often benefit. Children typically benefit more because their newly erupted permanent molars have the deepest grooves. We assess case-by-case during exams.
If you clench or grind your teeth at night, yes — over time grinding can cause significant tooth wear, broken restorations, jaw pain, and headaches. Custom night guards from our on-site lab fit precisely and last for years. We can assess whether you're a grinder during a routine exam.
A visual and tactile examination of your lips, tongue, cheeks, palate, throat, and neck for any signs of abnormal tissue. The screening takes a minute or two and is included at every routine checkup.
Yes — and you won't be judged. Many of our patients come to us after years away from a dentist. We'll do a comprehensive exam, identify what needs attention, and build a step-by-step plan around your priorities, comfort level, and budget.
