Digital workflow from scan to printed restoration

3D-printed dental restorations replace the traditional impression-and-lab workflow with a digital one. We take a 3D intraoral scan of the prepared tooth, design the restoration in software, and print the final restoration in our on-site SprintRay lab — all in one appointment for many cases. The result is same-day delivery of crowns, inlays, onlays, and other restorations that would normally require two appointments and a 2-to-3-week lab wait.

Suncoast runs the technology at a level usually reserved for academic and specialist practices. The practice uses SprintRay's full ecosystem for crowns, inlays, onlays, surgical guides for implant placement, provisional restorations, and digital denture work. Same-day 3D printing isn't right for every case. Complex aesthetic restorations on visible front teeth sometimes still benefit from a master ceramist's hand at a traditional lab — we'll tell you when that's the case. For posterior crowns, inlays, onlays, and most everyday restorative work, the same-day digital workflow is comparable to or better than traditional lab work, at a fraction of the patient-time investment. The same workflow drives our in-house 3D-printing lab for dentures, surgical guides, and night guards.

How same-day printing works

Four steps from scan to final restoration

Most same-day restorations complete in a single appointment of about 2 to 3 hours total.

Digital intraoral scan

A 3D scan of the prepared tooth and surrounding teeth. Faster, more comfortable, and more accurate than traditional putty impressions.

Design

The restoration is designed in CAD software, taking into account your bite, the adjacent teeth, and the material being used. The design typically takes 30 minutes.

Print and finish

The restoration is printed in our on-site SprintRay lab in resin or ceramic material as appropriate, then post-processed and polished. Printing time is typically 30 to 60 minutes.

Placement

The final restoration is checked for fit, color, and bite, then bonded into place. Final adjustments at the same appointment. You leave with the permanent restoration completed.

Common questions about same-day digital restorations.

For most cases, yes — modern 3D-printed crowns from a SprintRay system are clinically and aesthetically comparable to traditional lab crowns. The materials have improved significantly. For complex aesthetic cases on front teeth, we may still recommend traditional lab work — we'll tell you which is best for your case.
Typically no — and often less expensive than traditional lab work, because the lab fee is replaced by in-house printing costs. Free consultations include written pricing for both options where the case allows a choice.
Crowns, inlays, onlays, surgical guides for implant placement, provisional (temporary) restorations, denture bases, and study models. Some materials are still better suited to traditional lab work — we'll match the technique to the case.
Comparable to traditional lab-fabricated restorations — typically 10 to 15 years for permanent crowns with proper care. Material quality, bite forces, and oral hygiene affect longevity for both digital and traditional restorations.
The equipment is expensive, the training curve is real, and many practices haven't invested in the workflow. Dr. Larsen's SprintRay KOL status means we run the system at a level above average — including ongoing training, calibration, and adoption of new techniques as the technology evolves.
