Threading through, not lifting up

Trans-sinus implants are long titanium implants — typically 18 to 25 millimeters — that pass through the maxillary sinus floor to anchor in denser bone above. Unlike a sinus lift (which adds bone to the sinus floor before conventional implant placement), trans-sinus implants thread directly through the existing anatomy without requiring bone augmentation.

The procedure is used for patients with severe upper-jaw bone loss where conventional placement isn't possible and a sinus lift either has failed or isn't preferred. It's part of Suncoast's full remote-anchorage toolkit alongside zygomatic and pterygoid implants — most trans-sinus cases are part of hybrid full-arch restorations combining several of these approaches.

Because of the precision required to thread an implant through the sinus floor safely, trans-sinus placement is performed using CBCT-planned custom surgical guides and often X-Nav navigated surgery for real-time positioning. The procedure is done under on-site general anesthesia delivered by an anesthesiologist from London Health Sciences Centre — Suncoast is the only practice in the area with the GA permit to do this.

Surgery under general anesthesia

On-site GA delivered by a London Health Sciences Centre anesthesiologist. Implant placement using the surgical guide and X-Nav navigation. Typically 2–4 hours depending on case complexity.

Same-day temporary teeth

In most cases fixed temporary teeth are attached the same day; in some cases temporaries are added at a follow-up visit if initial stability requires it.

Healing and permanent prosthesis

3 to 6 months of healing while implants integrate. Permanent restoration fitted afterward — typically zirconia or hybrid material on full-arch cases.
