A standard cleaning and checkup appointment at Suncoast typically takes about 45 to 60 minutes and covers several things at once. The hygienist begins with a thorough cleaning — removing plaque, tartar (calculus), and surface stains — and follows up with polishing and a fluoride application as needed. We have 4 hygienists on staff, so we can usually find a convenient time slot.
Once the cleaning is complete, the dentist examines your teeth and gums for any signs of decay, cracks, gum disease, or other concerns. We also conduct an oral cancer screening — a careful visual and tactile examination of your mouth, throat, and neck for any signs of abnormal tissue. Oral cancer screenings are a routine but important part of preventive care; early detection makes a significant difference in outcomes.
X-rays are typically taken once a year (or as needed for specific concerns) to look for problems that aren't visible on the surface — decay between teeth, bone loss around implants, abscesses or cysts in the jaw, and other issues that need attention before they become emergencies.
Most cleaning appointments follow this five-step sequence over 45–60 minutes total.
Quick update on any health changes since your last visit — medications, allergies, conditions. Important for safe care planning.

If anything was identified during the exam, we discuss what it is, what your options are, and what your CDCP or insurance covers. No surprises; nothing scheduled without your agreement.
