What the lab does

Restorations designed and printed in-house

A SprintRay 3D-printing lab is a complete digital-to-physical pipeline for dental restorations. We design a restoration in CAD software based on a digital scan of your tooth, send the design to the printer, and produce the final piece on-site — usually within an hour for a single crown. The traditional alternative is sending a putty impression off to an external lab and waiting two weeks for the restoration to come back.

What we produce in our lab: same-day single-tooth crowns including posterior crowns where strength matters most; surgical guides for implant placement with CBCT-precise positioning; denture prototypes and finals; night guards and sports guards; provisional restorations during longer treatment plans; and 3D-printed bridges for select cases.

Dr. Larsen's role as a SprintRay Key Opinion Leader means active involvement in evaluating new printer materials and workflows with the manufacturer — including lecturing for SprintRay at dental industry events. For patients, this translates to access to validated improvements as they're released, and the confidence that our protocols are clinically current.

From scan to printed restoration

For a single-tooth crown, this entire sequence typically happens in one appointment.

Digital scan

Intraoral scanner captures a 3D model of your tooth (or the surgical area), adjacent teeth, and bite — a few minutes, no putty.

CAD design

Restoration designed digitally to match anatomy, bite contact, and contours. The dentist reviews and refines before printing.

Printing on SprintRay

Design sent to the printer. Print time for a single crown is typically under an hour. Post-print cleaning and curing finishes the piece.

Finishing and characterization

The restoration is polished and characterized for natural appearance — color shading and texture matched to surrounding teeth.

Fit, adjust, cement

Restoration tried in, adjusted as needed for bite and contacts, and cemented or bonded permanently.

Modern dental 3D-print materials are strong enough for posterior restorations under normal occlusal loads. The accuracy of the digital design and the fit are often better than traditional lab work. For heavy bruxers or specific high-stress cases, we'll discuss whether a printed, milled, or zirconia option is the right call for your situation.
Single-tooth crowns, surgical guides for implants, denture prototypes and finals, night guards and sports guards, and provisional restorations are routine. 3D-printed bridges are available for select cases. Long-span bridges and zirconia restorations may still go to outside labs depending on the case.

The technology is well-validated and the material library keeps expanding.
Yes. Modern dental 3D-print materials accept characterization (color shading, texture) for natural appearance. We finish every restoration to match surrounding teeth before cementation. Most patients can't distinguish a printed crown from a traditional ceramic crown by appearance.
Cost is similar to traditional crowns — what changes is timing (one visit instead of two) and process (no putty, no temporary). Coverage works the same: CDCP and insurance cover the restoration type, not the manufacturing method. We predetermine benefits before treatment.
