Removable partial dentures — fill the gaps

A removable partial denture (RPD) is a prosthetic that replaces one or more missing teeth in the same arch while keeping your remaining natural teeth in place. It typically consists of replacement teeth attached to a base — pink to match gums — with metal or flexible clasps that grip the natural teeth on either side of the gap for retention. You take it out daily for cleaning and remove it for sleep.

Partials work well for patients who are missing several teeth but still have healthy natural teeth they want to keep. The alternative — a fixed bridge — requires reducing the natural teeth on either side of the gap to support the bridge, which removes healthy tooth structure. Partials preserve those natural teeth. The other alternative — dental implants — is more permanent but involves surgery and is more expensive.

Most removable partials are made by denturists or dental labs and can be coordinated with your visit at Suncoast. We work alongside local denturists who refer patients to us for the surgical or restorative parts of complex cases. If you have a denturist you trust, we'll coordinate happily. If you don't, we can handle the partial denture work from start to finish.

What we look at before recommending a partial — versus a fixed bridge or implant-based restoration — is the long-term health of the abutment teeth (the natural teeth that will support the clasps), the overall bite, your daily habits around removal and cleaning, and your specific goals around feel and appearance. Partial dentures preserve more natural tooth structure than bridges and cost considerably less than implants, but they require nightly removal and adjacent teeth carry some additional load. CDCP and most private insurance plans typically cover removable partials; we predetermine benefits before fabrication.
